Milestones

August 1970

Originally, The Pink Pelican Club was formed by the Volunteer Bureau of Calgary in 1970, and the program was supervised by Mrs. Peggy Raymond, who was on staff with the Bureau at that time. The basic objective was to provide a social evening for children with disabilities. The club used teenaged volunteers to help run the program and provide peer interaction. The participants ranged in age from 12 – 20 years and came from all over Calgary.

1982/83

Between Friends Camp Bonaventure is established.

1985

Between Friends grew to 57 active members.

1989

The First Annual Charity Golf Tournament, organized by a volunteer committee and raised $35,000 for The CALGARY BETWEEN FRIENDS CLUB.  It was the beginning of a long-term commitment to help the Club become financially stable.

1992

A Counselor-in-Training program is offered for 30 teens.

1994

Over 350 registered members in 35 programs. This is a 400% growth since 1988.

2002

The 20th Anniversary of Between Friends is celebrated.

2007

Officially started offering programs for children under 5 years of age and to adults over the age of 30.

2010

Aktion Club is formed in partnership with KIWANIS CLUB OF CALGARY NORTHMOUNT.

2013

In partnership with Easter Seals Camp Horizon Between Friends is able to offer a formal 4 week Junior Leader Development Program.

2017

Between Friends celebrates it 35th Anniversary with 750 members!
