Perspective of a Practicum Student

My name is Reena and I am a practicum student who has spent the last couple of months working with Between Friends. At the beginning of September, I had no idea what to expect... embarking on this journey as a Between Friends program assistant. I was initially thrilled and intrigued to take on this position, as I always wondered how Between Friends provides social, recreation and self-development opportunities for a number of individuals with disabilities. One of my goals for the semester was to further expand my knowledge on the purpose and impact this organization has in our community. Through the number of individuals I have met at these ...

Everyone wins at Family Golf Day

Family Golf Day began as early as 2006 as a one day happening for Between Friends’ members, friends and family alike. Family Golf Day is an opportunity for a day of family time or, more recently, time with dad as it has fallen on Father’s Day the past couple of years. Attendees would gather at a local driving range to hit some balls and enjoy a few chuckles as people tried the quintessential Happy Gilmore run-up. Around 2008, everything changed. In a move of particular generosity, the Carey family offered their resources and availability to host the Family Golf Day as an event. Ridge Meadows is a private 9-hole course the family ...

Seeing Green – A Therapy Garden

A little over a year ago our friends at Agrium proposed the idea of having a therapy garden down at camp. We had heard how horticultural therapy benefits people of all ages and abilities, but also how it is growing in popularity as a programming option for people with disabilities. When the idea was first presented to Katie (Program Manager) and I, we were so excited. Over the next few weeks we had so many ideas of the programming possibilities a garden would provide. Having little to no expertise in gardening myself, we recruited the help of a Horticultural Therapist. After meeting with Janet Melrose, Calgary’s Cottage Gardener, our excitement ...

Group Hug

by: Michelle Murray Office Administrator inclusion [in-kloo-zhuh n] noun 1. the act of including. 2. the state of being included. 3. something that is included. When I was a child, I was bullied.  For some reason the other kids decided there was something wrong with me.  They’d turn their backs, walk away, and yell at me.  Worst of all, they isolated me from my surroundings. When I was a child, inclusion was never taught; most of the children I went to school with taunted and teased anyone who seemed slightly different; which always led me to think – what is difference, and who decides who’s different? My mother always taught ...
