Our volunteers and program staff demonstrate their ongoing commitment and enthusiasm for giving people with disabilities an opportunity to connect, grow, and belong through social and recreational activities. Between Friends offers educational scholarships in recognition of these individuals who champion and promote the principals of our organization.
Lucy Milne Scholarship
The Lucy Milne Scholarship represents a selection of outstanding people, characterized by their educational excellence, community leadership and commitment to people with disabilities. Volunteers and program staff who have made outstanding contributions to the organization and have been influenced by their work with Between Friends are recognized by the Lucy Milne Scholarship.
This scholarship was established by an anonymous donor in honour of Lucy Milne who dedicated 24 years to teaching elementary school with the Calgary Board of Education. She later became an education assistant to students with physical and learning disabilities. Through teaching, Lucy empowered students with cerebral palsy, down syndrome, and autism.
In Lucy’s words – “I have a great admiration and respect for individuals and organizations that help children and adults grow, learn, and enjoy their lives!”
The Catalyst Scholarship is offered in partnership with Catalyst Solutions. Created to recognize the contribution of our summer staff exemplifying the mission and values of Between Friends, the scholarship defines these attributes through our programs staff’s high standards of initiative and commitment to people with disabilities.
The Catalyst Scholarship recognizes individuals dedicated to improving the quality of life for people with disabilities. The intent of the scholarship is to aid the recipient’s overall education. It also promotes engagement and ongoing employment in the disability field by helping to develop the education, skills and knowledge that make this vocation meaningful and lasting.
This scholarship was established by a Partner with Catalyst Solutions, who is also a parent of a Between Friends member. It was through their interaction with Between Friends’ program staff that the Between Friends member and their family experienced a true sense of connecting, growing and belonging within the community.
